HOW DO YOU WALK AROUND WITHOUT CRASHING IN TO THINGS?
Well, actually, I don't always walk around without crashing into things. That is to say, I sometimes do crash into things, but for the most part, I use a combination of my hearing and touch. With my ears, I "hear" objects as I pass them. This might include posts, signs, overhead branches. Every object causes sound energy to be reflected and refracted in all sorts of directions. My ears pick up these subtle changes in sound energy and let me know that I've past a post, even if the post is three feet away. Or my ears will tell me that a very large object, such as a wall is coming up in ten feet. I don't actually get distance measurements sent to my brain, like data going to a Borg drone (Star Trek), the reflection in sound is subtly different, and over the years of using this technique, I have come to be a decent judge of distance. All sound bounces off objects, and if you can pick up the way the sound is being reflected or refracted, you can tell where objects, and even people are. I also use my sense of touch, in combination with a white cane, which is a stick made of metal or graphite with red reflective tape towards the bottom. This white cane tells me where objects are before I encounter them. I use the cane by sweeping it left and right in front of me as I walk. If I come up to a wall or a curb, the cane will let me know that the object or change in height of the walking surface has changed before I crash, or my feet go flying out from under me. If a route is too complicated, I just use a technique called sighted guide, where I will hold on to the elbow of a sighted person and allow them to guide me.

"What If..."
Hi Anna,
The kids put a little video together for you today and it was based on them researching animals with albinism. They also had a chance to chat a bit about "What If..." they had to deal with being a person with albinism.
I also informed the students that they needed to start thinking about promoting a "certain, up-and-coming STAR!" You can see how their marketing minds can locate and contact anyone in the world!

If I were blind and I couldn't see, I would describe color as the different feeling and emotions. I would see the way I would feel and think of that as a color. Of course, I wouldn't know what it would look like, but I could know what it would feel like. Like when I was mad I could see red, or what people descrided it to be. I would feel yellow and orange when I felt the suns rays on my back, when the days were to hot I would feel the red heat. The warmness, the soothingness and the calmness, the warmth I felt inner and outer, I would describe that as yellow. It's bright, happy and warm. but with feelings like grief sadness and agony, I would think of the ocean and the wind and the coldness, I would think that was blue or even purple. When I feel alone, sheltered and quietness, I would imagine a deep purple or a navy blue. The different shades would describe the difference of feelings that I would have had or the different things that I would feel. If I was blind and couldnt see colors, I would feel them, I would imagine them, and then imagine a colorless life, that would be hard to live within.

1. dude, brian, u could still skate with one eye. i started the trend rollerblading in my neighborhood. sure depth perception would be shot. but that dosnt stop me.
2. jasmine, it is hard to focus!
3. alana, lora, i do get lots of head aces, and my depth perseption sucks.
